5 best coffee shops in New York
1. Lenox Coffee
Lenox Coffee roasts its beans out of Red Hook and sources its milk upstate from Battenkill Valley Creamery. Its bright space in Central Harlem has been open since 2011 and serves a small menu of breakfast and lunch items as well as beer and wine. The pastries here are sourced from the Good Batch, Colson Patisserie, and a rotating roster of local New York bakeries.
2. Super Nice Coffee and Bakery by Danny Macaroons
The coffee at Super Nice is stellar, particularly its drink specials like the caramelized brown sugar and dulce de leche lattes, but do yourself a favor and throw on one of the cafe’s many baked goods or desserts. They’re always changing, but top-notch options that keep coming back include the cinnamon rolls, almond croissant, guava-cheese danish, and sandwiches. There’s no seating at the moment, but consider making your way to the nearby Marcus Garvey Park for an impromptu picnic.
3. Gertrude
Small and understated, Gertrude brings the excellence and artistry of Australian coffee to the Upper West Side. Go for the cortado, stay for the citrus almond cake, the spinach egg cheddar croissants, or the scones with meyer lemon marmalade and clotted cream. The beans are from Brooklyn’s Parlor Coffee, a micro roaster known for light, clean roasts.
4. Chalait
Matcha is the headliner at Chalait, a shop that bounced around Manhattan before settling down on the Upper West Side. Customers can get anything from perfectly-whisked, ceremonial-grade tea to a warm and comforting matcha latte. The coffee is treated with the same level of care, however, as is the food from the extensive all-day menu.
5. Variety Coffee Roasters
Variety Coffee Roasters is all grown up: One of the pioneers of NYC’s coffee scene, Variety’s new-ish shop on the Upper East Side is all wood paneling and tasteful lighting. The Chelsea location is just as urbane, while the original shops in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick are appropriately funky. Variety first started roasting coffee in 2014, and is known for its nutty, chocolatey roasts.
6. Kinship Coffee
Not content to let Long Island City have all the Queens coffee fun, Kinship helms a beloved three-cafe operation throughout Astoria. Within the past year, the coffee company started its own Astoria-based roastery, stocking its shops with a range of single-origin coffees and blends. Kinship also sells growlers of cold brew from each location.
